Those who want to become Primary Teachers need to take Paper I while those who want to become Middle School teachers need to take Paper II. Candidates who want to teach from Classes I to VIII can take both the papers of the UPTET exam.
Paper I and Paper II of the UPTET exam are conducted on the same day in two separate shifts. The UPTET exam is still conducted in the pen-and-paper mode.
UPTET 2019 Exam Pattern: Paper I and Paper II of the UPTET exam have almost the same format. A total of 150 questions are asked in each paper. Candidates have to solve them in two hours or 120 minutes. It means that speed is of utmost importance in the exam.
A candidate has about 48 seconds to solve one question. If you keep 10 minutes for reading the instructions and checking out the paper and 5 minutes for checking out your answers later, you only get about 42 seconds to solve each question.
Thankfully, the UPTET examination only includes objective questions. All the questions are of multiple-choice type. Each question carries one mark.
There is no negative marking in the paper.
Paper I and Paper II have similar sections but the syllabus of each paper is different.
In Paper I
- 30 questions are asked from Child Development and Pedagogy.
- 30 questions are asked from Language I (which is Hindi).
- 30 questions are asked from Language II (which one can choose from English, Urdu, and Sanskrit).
- 30 questions from Mathematics, and
- 30 questions from Environmental Studies (EVS).
In Paper II
- 30 questions are asked from Child Development and Pedagogy.
- 30 questions are asked from Language I (which is Hindi).
- 30 questions are asked from Language II (which one can choose from English, Urdu, and Sanskrit).
- 60 questions from Mathematics & Science OR Social Studies.
Minimum Qualifying Marks for UPTET 2019. UPTET cut off marks to qualify the exam are: 60% for General category students (which means candidates need to score at least 90 marks out of a total of 150 marks), and 55% for SC, ST, and OBC category students (which means candidates need to score at least 83 marks out of a total of 150 marks).
The actual UPTET cutoffs depend on the number of vacancies and the number of candidates applying for the exam. In 2019, it is expected that if you score around 95 as a General category aspirant or 85 marks as a reserved category aspirant, you should be able to clear the exam easily.
UPTET 2018 Paper Analysis
Solving previous years' question papers is always recommended as a practice run for any competitive exam. The UPTET 2018 paper analysis can help you:
- judge the difficulty level of the paper.
- identify the important topics, and
- know what to expect on the day of the exam.
In 2018, both UPTET Paper I and Paper II question papers had a moderate difficulty level. But they were a tad difficult the 2017 UPTET exam. Most candidates last year also believed that the UPTET exam was modelled on the NCERT pattern.
UPTET 2018 Paper I Analysis
Most candidates pegged the English Language section of the paper as the toughest and the EVS section as the easiest one. Mathematics questions were moderate to tough. All the other sections had moderate difficulty levels.
UPTET 2018 Paper II Analysis
The questions in the Social Studies section revolved mostly around the pedagogy of the subject. As in Paper I, the English Language section was claimed to be the toughest section. All the other sections had moderate difficulty levels.

Child Development and Pedagogy
Pedagogy was undoubtedly the most important aspect of this section. 18 questions were asked from this part of the syllabus. 3 questions were asked from the Influence of Heredity & Environment. 2 questions each were asked from:
- Concept of Development and its relationship with Learning.
- Child Psychology.
- Personality, and
One question was asked from Intelligence.
It is a scoring section. It assesses your command over learning and teaching habits. You just need to read through this section to score well.
Hindi Language
Last year, this section was of moderate difficulty level. It did not have a passage last year.
English Language
This section did not have a passage last year and was seen as 'tough'. Most questions were based on basic grammar and vocabulary.
Environmental Studies
It was an easy section. One could easily score 20-22 marks in this section by going through it once.
Social Studies (from Paper II)
22 out of 60 questions in this section were based on Pedagogy. 11 questions were from History and 10 each from Geography and Polity. 8 questions were from General Awareness. It was an 'easy' section'.
Mathematics (from Paper II)
10 out of 30 questions in Math section were based on Advanced Mathematics. 6 questions each were asked from Pedagogy and Geometry & Mensuration. 2 questions each were asked from Number System, Interest related questions, and HCF & LCM. 1 question each was asked from Pie Chart and Probability.
Science (from Paper II)
This section was a bit difficult last year. 10 questions were asked from Biology, 9 from Chemistry, and 7 from Physics. 4 questions were based on Pedagogy.

Remember, objective-type MCQs are easier than essay-type questions. If you get an answer wrong, you only lose one mark. About 40% of questions are based directly on facts and definitions and are easy to crack. But since MCQs in a test cover almost all parts of the syllabus, you need to study each and every topic thoroughly. UPTET exam requires both accuracy and speed. So, study well and practice as much as possible.
The competition for the UPTET exam is high but it is definitely easier than the UPSC or the Bank PO (Probationary Officer) exam. Practising previous years' UPTET question papers is the best way to increase your accuracy and speed in the exam. It helps you get familiar with the type of questions asked in the exam.

The best part is that many times, questions get repeated in the UPTET exam. If you have already solved previous year papers or have gone through solved past year papers for the exam, you will definitely be able to score a few easy points in the exam.
You can also search for repeated questions of the UPTET exam online. Many YouTubers talk about the most common questions asked in the UPTET and CTET exam which might be helpful to you.
Since there is no negative marking in the exam, it does not make any sense to leave a question unanswered. Remember, you cannot change your answer later. Hence, first mark the answers for the questions you are sure about and then, start with the guesswork. Smart guessing can help you net a few bonus points too.
Pedagogy is the most important section in each subject. Prepare it on a priority basis. Then, move on to other topics in the syllabus.
When you are stuck, use the elimination method. In this method, you strike out the options that are definitely wrong. When you are familiar with the subject, it is easy to guess which options do not fit at all. If you are able to strike out two wrong options for the question, you increase your chances of getting the correct answer from 25% to 50%!
In Physics, one quick way to narrow down options is to look at the 'units' of the answer. If the question asks you to calculate time in 'seconds', any answers with 'minutes' or 'hours' will automatically be incorrect.
In calculation-type questions, it might be more efficient to simply fit in the given values in the options in the question to see if they are correct. It means that you put the answers first and calculate in reverse to see if it is correct or not.
UPTET 2019 Exam Day Tips
Sunglasses, calculators, electronic devices, and all papers and documents are prohibited inside the exam venue campus on the examination day. You can only carry the admit card, ID card with your photo, and photocopy of your qualifying marksheets on the day of the exam.
You need to reach the examination venue 45 minutes before the exam starts. Students will not be allowed to enter the test centre 10 minutes after the exam starts. No extra time will be given to students in any case.
Most of the competitive exams are available in online or CBT (Computer Based Test) mode. Those who are used to the CBT pattern might find the pen-and-paper mode cumbersome. There are a few things you should keep in mind while filling up the Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) sheet in the UPTET exam:
- Only use a black ballpoint pen to colour the circle of the right answer. Since you cannot delete an answer, make sure you fill-up the circle in the right column. Overwriting or filling up more than one circle in an answer will automatically disqualify it for assessment purposes.
- Be sure to write the numbers of questions you've solved in the given space in words and numerics.
Make sure you fill up all the information asked for in the OMR sheet, such as:
- Roll Number,
- Number of the Question Booklet,
- Series of the Question Booklet,
- The language you opt for,
- The subject you choose in Part IV.
- Colour the right circles too. Incomplete information can disqualify your answer sheet automatically.
