Public Sector jobs in India - An immensely safe and serviceable career


More than 18 million people are employed in government sector and for millions of degree and diploma holders, it is a ticket to financial security, job security and social status. In the government sector, candidates are recruited at four levels. The central and state governments of India select candidates through Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) and public service commissions, respectively. Further, public sector organizations and independent bodies hire people either separately or via centralized recruitment boards.Those who are interested in getting into public sector jobs can take a look at the five different fields listed below. Each field includes exhaustive details.

1. Banking: In banking sector, professionals are hired across different levels as assistant managers, management trainees, marketing & recovery officers and agriculture officers (rural). Nevertheless, the two most popular positions that are available at entry level include Probationary Officer (PO) and Clerical Grade Officer. A PO is offered somewhere between Rs. 10,000 and 18,240 & a Clerical Grade Officer from Rs. 4,410 to 13,210. To enter these positions, candidates need to do post-graduation with specialization for middle and higher levels.
Basic knowledge of computer is an added advantage. In this field, usually, openings are meant for candidates who belong to chartered accountancy, cost accountancy, management, agriculture and commerce. Banking sector also hire insurance advisors, investment officers, foreign exchange manager, financial analysts, systems manager, corporate credit personnel, etc. To get these positions, candidates need to work on several areas – relationship management, numeracy and mathematics, language, cultural awareness, knowledge of industry and product, information and communication technology and interpersonal skills in addition to vocational or professional qualifications.

2. Education: For natural sciences, UGC/CSIR-NET is conducted by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). In order to sit for this test, candidates need to have a postgraduate degree in the relevant subject. The test is held two times every year in the months of June and December. The test comprises two papers. The first paper is designed to measure teaching and research skills of the candidates and the second paper measures candidate’s knowledge in his/ her subject of interest.

3. Health: Public sector corporations and government hospitals are always in search of medical officers. One of the most coveted openings in this field includes for Nurse/Nursing officers/Sisters. For this position, B.Sc holders in nursing or diploma holders in general nursing and midwifery can apply. 2 to 3 years of work experience is also required. In addition to this, subject specialists, radiologists, pharmacists, anesthetists and medical superintendents are some of the other excellent positions available in this field.

4. Science & Technology: Public sector organizations such as Uranium Corporation of India Limited, Hindustan Organic Chemicals Limited, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited and Indian Oil Limited hired many S&T personnel. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research and its laboratories also offered employment for senior/principal scientists. Apart from this, many scientists were also recruited in this field.
To get these positions, candidates need to appear for a Scientist Entry Test (SET) conducted by the Recruitment and Assessment Centre. Further, the S&T sector also hires employees in the fields of education, power, health, basic science and protection technologies. In last few years, the positions in research and teaching have been increased in the academic world.Owing to this, the demand for Research Associates, Junior and Senior Research Fellows and Research Fellows & Assistants got created. Education institutes including state and central level universities and National Institutes of Technology (IITs) conduct recruitment for these positions at regular intervals.
